Food and Nutrition – Eduqas GCSE (9-1)

Food preparation and nutrition enables learners to make connections between theory and practice so that they are able to apply their understanding of food science and nutrition to practical cooking.

During Year 10 students will learn the practical skills to create a range of culinary dishes alongside the technical knowledge that enables them. Students will also be able to understand the fundamentals of healthy living, dietary variations and food science for examinable components of the course.

Students will learn how to

  • Prepare balanced diets
  • Explore the effects of food chemistry
  • Preserve foods and prevent spoilage
  • Cook using a variety of methods
  • Make use of food commodities withing recipes

During y11 students will undertake two sustained design and make tasks, based on a scientific experiment and then a further contextual challenge set by Eduqas.  Students will develop realistic proposals as a result of the exploration of opportunities, users’ needs, wants and values.

Students will learn how to

  • Conduct experiments into food chemical reactions
  • Analyse and review findings
  • Research plan and prepare menus
  • Focus on dietary needs with specific user groups
  • Produce a portfolio of evidence for a food-based challenge
  • Prepare themselves for the examination
