Curriculum intent

All students who study Art will engage in practical lessons that encourage participation, hinged on the Tudor Values. Students explore four fundamentals, develop, refine, record and present.

This is at the core of all learning, across a broad & ambitious curriculum that covers a range of themes, artist and materials.

Students seek opportunities to be independent, creative, challenged and inspired whilst developing their personal their learning.

Year 7

During year 7 you will work on three projects that give you the opportunity to develop a range of skills using selection of materials and processes.

In the Allotment: Looking at the basic skills needed to draw and paint. You will develop tonal drawings, colour mixing whilst learning about colour theory and paint application.  This project also provides an opportunity to look at both traditional and contemporary artists that look at nature whilst working in a range of 2D materials such as pencil, paint and pastel.

Mythical Creatures: Looking at art from a range of different cultures from around the world. You will continue to develop your drawing and painting skills and have the opportunity to whilst developing illustrations for books. This project also allows for 2D work in a mixture of 2D materials. You will have the opportunity to look at the meanings behind zoomorphic creatures and dragons.

Portraiture & Identity: Looking at portraiture in art you will develop drawing, painting and begin to explore 2D relief and 3D sculpture using materials such as card and clay. This project also provides an opportunity to develop maths skills when applying facial proportions. You will explore both traditional and contemporary approaches to the theme of identity.

Year 8

During year 8 you will work on three projects that give you the opportunity to develop a range of skills using a selection of 2D and 3D materials.

Still Life/ Collections: Looking at the technical skills needed to draw objects you will look at proportion, scale and composition to create your drawings.  This project also provides an opportunity to look at various artists and movements whilst experimenting with detailed pencil, paint and pastel work.

Cultural: Looking at art from a range of different cultures from around the world, you will develop your drawing, and mixed media such as textile, card and clay. You will look at how pattern is used and how colour represents meaning. This project provides links to Maths, Geography and Ethical Studies. Areas of study could include Day of the Dead, Maori tattoos and designs and Islamic pattern.

Architecture: Looking at traditional and contemporary buildings, spaces and structures you will learn about different architects as well as different styles and purposes of buildings. You will develop technical skills needed to draw buildings through learning about perspective. This project provides links to maths with accuracy and measurements of drawings. You can work with a range of materials including 2D relief and 3D construction.

Year 9

You will broaden your existing art skills that you have gained from year 7 and 8 and develop techniques and expand knowledge about the work of artists whilst producing work in four key areas; develop, experiment, record and present. Over the year you will complete three mini projects that go under the heading Beneath the Surface.

Bones: Looking at the human body, bones, veins, and heart and the structure of the skeleton. You will continue to develop detailed drawings whilst leaning to combine and experiment with drawing and painting techniques. The artist you study will influence how you use 2D materials.

Sea Life: Looking at the sea life, water, plants, fish and sea creatures. You will develop observational drawing skills from real life objects whilst using a range of 2D materials in particular print. The work of other artists will inspire you to develop your personal work.

Bonnet: Looking at man-made mechanical structures such as transport engines, bike, cogs, and circuit boards etc. You will focus on  drawings and look at movements such as Futurism and Steampunk. Your work will focus on 3D shape, space and structure whilst working with pen, paint, collage and 2D relief work and/or 3D construction.

Year 10 & 11

GCSE in Art and Design, OCR, Fine Art J171

Component 01: Portfolio – 120 marks, non-exam assessment.

You will begin to build your portfolio of work for your GCSE which is worth 60% of your final grade. This portfolio will be based on one of the three projects Sea life, Bodies, Bonnet based on the theme Beneath the Surface. You will research deeper into one of those projects and make your own project from this. For example Sea Life you could explore pollution of our oceans and look at plastic and erosion of coral reefs or develop surface pattern work based on shape, pattern and colour of fish. This portfolio will be covered in all three terms of year 10 and first term of year 11.

Your portfolio will be submitted December of year 11.

Component 02: Externally set task – 8o marks

You have 10 weeks to prepare photos, drawings, look at artist and develop ideas and experiment with materials, from this you will plan a final piece of work. In a 10 hour controlled exam you will produce your final work.

Both the Portfolio and Externally set task work towards the following four assessment criteria:

A01 Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources.

Ao2 Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes.

AO3 Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses.

AO4 Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language.

Year 12 & 13

A Level in Art and Design, OCR, Fine Art H601

You will explore, research and acquire techniques and develop skills, knowledge and understanding in a range of Fine Art media. You will look at relevant images, artefacts and resources relating to Fine Art. You may use traditional methods and/or digital techniques to produce Fine Art work.

This can be achieved by working toward the extension and development of particular themes, ideas or issues. Drawing skills should be understood and developed as appropriate to the ways of recording and communicating intentions, ideas and emotions in the context of Fine Art.

Component 01: Personal investigation (60% final mark)

  • a related study: an extended response of a guided minimum of 1000 words.

This work will be produced in year 12 and some of year 13. You are required to choose one or more area(s) of study, such as:
