The qualification is a two-year course designed for Sixth Form learners who wish to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education, apprenticeships, or employment in science-related fields. The course develops practical, investigative and analytical skills while building a strong foundation in biology, chemistry and physics

What will I study?

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with higher education providers and employers to ensure that it supports progression to university courses and careers within the science sector. Learners develop scientific knowledge alongside practical laboratory and research skills that are highly valued by universities and employers.

Learners will study the following mandatory units:

• Principles and Applications of Science I
• Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
• Science Investigation Skills

In addition, learners will study an optional specialist unit determined by the Academy or Sixth Form. Possible options may include:

• Physiology of Human Body Systems
• Contemporary Issues in Science
• Genetics and Genetic Engineering
• Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques
• Industrial Chemical Reactions
• Electrical Circuits and Their Applications
• Medical Physics Applications

Throughout the course, learners will develop skills in scientific investigation, data analysis, laboratory techniques, report writing, independent research and problem-solving. These transferable skills prepare students for both higher education and employment

This qualification is primarily designed to support progression to higher education. It is widely recognised by universities and can be used to support applications to a broad range of science-related degree courses.
