BTEC stands for Business and Technology Educational Council and is a vocational qualification. The BTEC National can be used to gain entry into Higher Education or as a foundation career. BTEC courses have been offered for many years and are widely recognised by employers and Higher Education Institutions and professional organisations. There are a NVQ level 3 qualification and provide the equivalent to 3 traditional A-levels. A BTEC National qualification is based upon a Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria.

Sixth-form students make good progress from their starting points. Progress in vocational subjects, studied by the majority of students, is consistently strong and significantly better than that typically seen nationally.

Commitment

All courses require full-time attendance. In addition some courses have day release/block placements commitment as a mandatory requirement of the course.

Work Experience

Students complete a period of Work Experience of at least 2 weeks. For some courses there is a structured Work Experience programme, including day and block release.

Assessment

Assessment will either be internal, through a teacher-assessed portfolio, through placements and through an externally marked project.

All internal assessment will be subject to internal moderation and by the awarding body.

Units Offered

Each Level 3 course offers compulsory and optional units and students complete approximately 12 units for a Level 3 National Diploma and approximately 18 units for a Level 3 National Extended Diploma over the course of 2 years at the Academy. For optional units the Academy selects appropriate units for the course and therefore not all optional units published by Pearson will be offered and may differ year on year based upon the resources available and specific expertise of the staff team. The Subject Lead for each course can give you more details on units offered.
